Boston in 1776 is described by George Washington.

March 20, 1776

Although Washington writes that the town was not in as bad a state as he expected, Arthur Gilman subsequently writes, “The heroic age of Boston ended when Washington took possession of it for America. . . Boston was destined to grow in the lines that the fathers laid out for it, to become rich and to be useful; but never again was it to have an heroic age.”
